Title:
Common Flax

Work:
Circular Design, Textile Installations, Videoproducing, Co-Design, Networkbuilding

Product:
Textiles, Publication, Film, Exhibition Design

Location:
Hamburg, Bolzano, Berlin 2020 – 2022

Collaboration:
Schwob, SwissFlax

Details:
Considering the materials and objects that surround us, we often do not know from which resources they consist, where they come from and under which conditions the materials are processed. Because production takes place in distant countries all over the world.

Common flax is a geo–design project and a reaction and reflection on this present issue in the context of local flax production in Europe. Flax is one of the oldest crops in Europe. It has only been forgotten. With this project, Mina Mahouti intend to investigate the smallest scale in which linen processing can take place regionally and to create innovative and circular applications using an artistic and explorative approach.

Linen textiles from European cultivation and processing form the basis for installations. Linen is used to communicate through linen: Images, satellite pictures and graphics are visualized and woven into a linen fabric as stored information.

Through material research the potentials of this diverse crop beyond its traditional products are explored. In an exhibition, the objects are presented to create contact points with the raw material flax and to draw attention to the value of local manufacturing.

Wooden Surfboard

Work:
Craft, Product Design, Circular Design, Open Design, Material Research

Location:
Bolzano, 2020
Details:

This project creates a light wooden surfboard that does not harm the environment.
Therefore a digital tool was designed to make the traditional surfboard production more interesting again and to support the process of building an own surfboard.

An open-source manual is created that describes all the steps of the construction. The process and tools are explained and it is ensured that simple and few tools are used so that people have the possibility to build the board at home or in the garden.

This surfboard does not contain epoxy resin and glass fibres, as these have a great environmental impact and are not degradable in nature.
Basically there are six steps to build the surfboard. Here you can find an open source file, a step-by-step manual and more information about the project:

www.circularsurfing.de

Workshops for surfboard building are planned for march 2023 in Hamburg and Berlin. For more information and pre-reservations, feel free to contact me via email.

Work:
Circular Design, Product Design

Product:
Furniture

Location:
Berlin 2022

Details:
Circular product design of a sofa made of local oak wood. Only wooden joints were used in the production, which are fixed with natural bone glue. The organic glue is water-soluble, making it possible to disassemble the piece of furniture again. A modular design allows the sofa to be converted into a double bed in just a few simple steps.

Location:

Details:
Objects are produced using natural materials and traditional manufacturing techniques.

The works are done with hemp lime, a mixture of hemp shives, clay and lime as a binding material. Hemp shives are a by-product of the industry and by using these materials they get a value attributed to them again.

The surfaces are sealed by natural sealants and waxes. The traditional craftsmanship of Tadellakt is used in combination with natural pigments to make the objects water-repellent and smooth.

Details:
The Palmobilia project of the Goethe-Institut Alexandria is an ecological project that combines sustainable furniture design and training to qualify craftspeople.

During this time, I gave a hands-on workshop on circular design. Creative, sustainable designs were created by Egyptian designers and made from palm tree fronds by local producers during the workshop. Based on their long-established knowledge of craftsmanship, sustainable and affordable pieces of furniture were produced.

Title: Natural Cooling

Work: Design, Urban Development

Location: Bolzano, 2018

Collaboration: CIPRA, Alena Dziedzitz

Details: This project has an urban planning approach that takes up the theme of natural cooling in the city. Bolzano, is one of the hottest cities in Italy, with an increase in temperatures during the summer months.

What can be created to make life more pleasant for people in urban areas? With the goal of the project to make the urban space more liveable through simple, natural cooling modules, the project concentrates on a meaningful redesign and reinterpretation of a bus stop, which has a cooling and shading function. Through material research it became obvious that materials such as concrete, steel and glass are mainly used in the city. On the one hand, these materials absorb heat and store it and on the other they are produced with high energy consumption. In order to bring a circular approach into the city, an area of application was chosen to integrate nature into the city. Local resources form the basis for the prototype with little consumption of energy, the use of primary materials and without long transport distances. The material loam in combination with plants were used, because they influence the microclimate through evaporation cooling. In order to create comfortable living environments for people, a transformation of cities is necessary. The aim of this research project is to reduce the temperature in urban areas. This project demonstrates the importance of natural materials and the value of greening in urban planning. At the same time it will give impulses for sustainable urban planning in the future, based on the participation of the local population. Resources can be used again and again for new buildings without having to take more raw materials from nature through the circular approach.

Finally the approach shows how a bus stop can be transformed into a community place with an urban gardening approach.

Details:

Invisible, and yet everywhere. Air is always already on its way to becoming something else. From molecule to atmosphere: the global climate crisis and thus the possible futures of our coexistence will be decided by means of air. How could a new sensorium emerge for the coming? What will connect us in the future?

The exhibition »Airbound« provides space for discussing geopolitical urgencies of the present through climate fictions and speculative everyday scenarios. They confront us with a new awareness of ecosystem fragility in terms of air critical futures. At stake is the contested knowledge of the climate, the destructive use of resources, and the injustices that are inherently linked to it.

Air as a medium stimulates speculation about possible social and ecological states of aggregation. The exhibition revolves around the materiality of air that is collective, active, and intelligent, yet precarious. »Airbound« is therefore dedicated to coexistence through and with air and its possible futures – developed in an open process by collaborators from society, science, and design. The exhibits problematize the technical promises of climate engineering and life under the pressure of ever-increasing emissions. They present designerly and research-based approaches to what air carries with it and the intimate processes of breathing. What is in the air once critical climatic tipping points have already been passed? In which ways do local approaches and other technologies offer hope? What new (breathing) practices and routines are we developing as individuals and collectives?
