Details:
Bottom ash is the non-combustible residue of municipal waste incineration. It can be found along the waterfront areas of Hamburg’s harbour, where it appears in rock-like formations.
On closer inspection, these formations are not natural stones, but solidified fragments of incinerated household waste.
The material consists of the remaining fractions of municipal waste streams that resist combustion. It raises questions of toxicity, composition, and potential secondary use.
The research project investigates the material constitution of bottom ash and explores possibilities for reprocessing and reuse. Initial experiments focus on the morphological properties of these artificially formed igneous-like structures and on the development of glazes derived from the material itself.
